Poplur Kulcher

This week I am trying to get my mind round popular culture. What makes culture popular? What is culture? Will reading this help? Is culture just the Arts or has it a wider meaning. Does all the street art other bloggers have been commenting on count as popular culture or is it just an art gallery which has come outside to try and reach the populace in general? this corner is becoming full of questions - but are there any answers? Is a sand castle art???
Does this pose even more questions?

Comments:
Looks like you have found some useful sites. So many definitions to choose from for popular culture, aren't there? Jackie and Elaine's book is really easy to understand by the way.
I definitely think street art is popular culture; I think it specifically tries to be 'other' to elite culture. Interestuing though is the way in which some popular culture is mainstream and invests in capitalism; while other types of pop cult is 'resistant' in its discourses.
As for your last link ... I cannot bear opera. I think it deliberately excludes me. I just do not understand it ...
Finally ....
If you want to link to a specific post on a blog by the way (btw) you can click on the comments bit of the post. Then use the url that comes up, as your link.

Have been thinking again about pop cult and street art. Now feel les sure!!
Reckon one has to closely read the definitions - I think that some would regard it as pop cult, and some not!

I link popular culture in my mind to the everyday which I adore.
It has its roots I think in William's idea of culture as ordinary also Richard Hoggart's work.
I like popular culture because as an ethnographer, it is surprising, wonderfully complex and is entwined with practice.
There, all on Saturday afternoon.

Thank you for your comments - lots to think about!

I asked someone on Flickr your question. See here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/arte/165101448/
