One of my mother's friends was murdered on Sunday night - hard to think about anything else.

What a horrible thing to happen.One hesitates to ask how ? or why? We do all seem much closer to violent acts these days.

That is awful. I hope you are okay. If you read the article that I linked to from my blog you may see similarities between that and how it somehow feels invasive that something that horrible can cross-over to this space. But then should 'this space' remain removed from so-called real life.
